HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation: The West Hartford Owner’s Guide

A HeatShield chimney cap installation in West Hartford typically runs $340-$620 depending on flue size and whether the crown needs repair before the cap goes on. Most replacements we do are completed in a single visit, and we stock common HeatShield cap sizes on our trucks. Homeowners usually figure out something’s wrong when water starts dripping into the firebox after a rain, or when they spot rust streaks running down the brick from a cap that’s been loose since the last nor’easter.

Which HeatShield Models This Applies To

HeatShield caps come in two main lines: the standard stainless series and the Pro-Grade line with reinforced mesh and heavier-gauge lids. The standard line fits flues from 8″×8″ up to 13″×13″ square, or round flues from 8″ to 12″ diameter. The Pro-Grade caps add about 40% more mesh coverage and use 24-gauge 304 stainless instead of 26-gauge, which matters in West Hartford where road salt in the air off I-84 accelerates corrosion on thinner metal.

To identify what you’ve got, look for the stamped model number on the underside of the lid, visible when you open the damper and shine a light up. It’ll read something like HS-SS-1013 for a standard 10″×13″ cap, or HS-PG-1013 for the Pro-Grade equivalent. If the stamp’s rusted over, measure the flue tile opening at the crown, not the chimney top outside dimensions. That’s the compatibility gotcha we see most often: owners measure the wrong thing and order a cap that sits like a hat on a horse.

We install OEM HeatShield caps and also carry quality equivalents from Gelco that match the Pro-Grade specs at a lower price point. The Gelco equivalents use the same 304 stainless and carry a comparable warranty, but the mounting hardware differs slightly. We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with HeatShield, so we’ll match the right part to your actual situation rather than pushing a brand.

Signs Your HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

  • Water in the firebox after rain. The cap’s lid has shifted or the mesh sides have separated from the frame, letting rain run straight down the flue. In West Hartford’s freeze-thaw cycles, this water expands and cracks flue tiles from the inside out.
  • Rust stains on the brick below the crown. Stainless steel shouldn’t rust, but the 26-gauge standard line will show surface oxidation after 8-12 years in Connecticut’s humid summers and salted winters. Once you see orange streaks, the metal is thinning.
  • Animals or nesting debris in the fireplace. The mesh has corroded through or pulled away from the frame, creating gaps large enough for squirrels or starlings. We pulled a nest out of a Farmington Avenue colonial last March that had been blocking the flue since October.
  • The cap is visibly tilted or missing after a windstorm. HeatShield caps use a tension-band mount or masonry screws into the crown. If the crown itself has spalled or cracked, the fasteners lose purchase and the cap walks in high winds.
  • Smoke backing up into the room on mild days. The mesh is clogged with creosote or has collapsed inward, restricting draft. This happens more often on north-facing chimneys in West Hartford where the cap stays damp and creosote hardens into the mesh.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range
Standard HeatShield cap, installed $340-$460
Pro-Grade or Gelco equivalent, installed $420-$540
Crown repair + cap installation $580-$620
Level-2 camera inspection with photo report $89 (Seasonal Tune-Up)

What drives the range: flue size, whether the crown needs patching before the cap mounts, and whether we need to extract broken fasteners from a previous installation. Every estimate is itemized before we start. The number on the estimate is the number on the invoice. Our work is covered by the 90-Day Done Right Promise, in writing, no arguing. If it’s not right, we come back.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s exactly one thing a homeowner can safely check: whether the cap is visibly loose or missing. Stand at ground level with binoculars. Don’t climb the roof. Chimney work at height is genuinely dangerous, and the cap itself weighs enough to do real damage if it comes loose while you’re handling it.

What goes wrong with DIY: improper crown sealing underneath the cap flange, which traps water and destroys the crown in two seasons; wrong fastener type that corrodes and snaps; and the common mistake of mounting to deteriorated crown surface that looks solid but crumbles under the drill. We’ve re-done enough homeowner cap jobs to know that doing it right the first time, or plan on doing it twice, applies here more than most places.

If your cap is failing, call (860) 743-1516. We’ll confirm the model, check stock, and book you in. Most jobs are done in a single visit.
